Faces Places Film Features French Filmmakers 89 Year Old Agnes Varda and 33 Year Old JR
Friday, January 19, 2018, 01:53 PM
In Faces Places the charming 89-year old French New Wave filmmaker and photographer Agnes Varda teams up with acclaimed 33 year-old French photographer and muralist JR to co-direct this wonderful road trip documentary. The kindred spirits discuss French image makers and visit Henri Cartier-Bresson's secluded grave and go searching for Jean-Luc Godard, who JR bears an uncanny resemblance to.

But primarily they tour the French countryside in a van made out to look like a giant camera. In reality it is a photobooth and giant printer. The people they meet and photograph end up plastered at humongous mural size on the sides of village buildings, barns, and even stacks of shipping containers.

The film has come and gone in the Midwest but hopefully it makes it to Netflix or Amazon. It has been shortlisted for best documentary this year. Let's hope the Oscar buzz gets it the attention it deserves. And best of all it is non-political at a time when we all need relief. But at the same time it is a celebration of friendship and human nature.

New Updated Web Site
Monday, December 18, 2017, 01:59 PM
I just updated my website to make it more mobile friendly and added new images. In particular the expanded site now includes twenty three images from a new project documenting the Upper Mississippi River valley in the driftless area of Minnesota and Wisconsin. The photos, 360 degree aerial panoramas, have been created using a UAV or drone. The work is being exhibited as 16X80 inch prints. There will be a one person exhibit of the work in the fall of 2018 in Red Wing and another in the fall of 2019 in Minneapolis.

The series will cover the area of bluffs, valleys and coulees untouched by the glaciers that created the flat plains of Minnesota and the West yet carved by the melting waters of those same glaciers. For this project it encompasses roughly from Hastings Minnesota and Prescott Wisconsin to Prairie du Chien WI and the Iowa - Minnesota border. It will be expanded in the future to Dubuque Iowa and the Wisconsin - Illinois border.

Check out the site. It is at: davidhusom.com

Wonderful Adobe video on the 94 year old colorist Carlos Cruz-Diez. I never buy into the notion that anyone is "too old to use a computer." Watching this I am sure you will agree.

Jizi: Journey of the Spirit at the Weisman Museum at the U of MN

165 foot painting by Chinese artist Jizi. Click to see larger.

I have had an interest in panoramic images for a long time. I have often seen Chinese scrolls as another form of panos. But this one blew me away. The brush and ink painting wraps around the whole gallery in the current exhibit at the Weisman Museum. In addition there is a room full of massive paintings. To top it off there is a wonderful video of the late Jizi talking about his work and the struggles Chinese artists faced during the Cultural Revolution. As Jizi himself says "it is no longer enough to paint the mountain. You must now paint the universe."

Up through the end of the year. I will be making multiple trips back. Here is more on the show:
